ESOS Phase 4Compliance deadline 5 December 2027 · qualification date 31 December 2026Check if you must comply →

ESOS for manufacturers, run as an engineering exercise.

Energy is one of your largest controllable costs, and most of it sits in your processes, not your offices. Our team are process engineers as well as registered ESOS Lead Assessors, so your audit is built around steam, compressed air, motors and heat recovery, and hands you savings worth acting on.

Competence is a legal requirement

Audited by engineers who know your industry.

An ESOS audit has to be carried out and signed off by people competent to do it, and that is a legal requirement, not a nicety. For manufacturing, that means a registered Lead Assessor and auditors who genuinely understand how your sector uses energy, rather than a generalist ticking boxes. Get the wrong team and the audit is neither compliant nor useful, which is why we run it as an engineering exercise built around your operation.

That team is our registered ESOS consultants and Lead Assessors, the engineers who run every ESOS audit we deliver.

Where the energy goes

Energy audited by engineers who understand your processes

A generic energy audit that counts lighting and heating misses where a factory actually spends its energy. ESOS requires 95% coverage, which for a manufacturer means the plant, not just the building.

01

Process heat & steam

Boilers, furnaces, ovens and steam distribution, usually the single biggest load, and where the biggest losses hide.

02

Compressed air

Often the most expensive utility per useful kWh, with leakage and over-pressurisation quietly wasting a large share of it.

03

Motors & drives

Pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors running continuously, frequently without variable-speed control.

04

Process cooling & refrigeration

Chillers and process cooling that run hard year-round and respond well to control and heat-recovery measures.

Where we find savings

Where we typically find savings on a factory floor.

Every opportunity is costed and ranked by payback, so the same audit that closes your ESOS obligation also builds the business case for the measures worth doing.

Heat recovery

Recovering waste heat from compressors, flue gases and process cooling to displace boiler and space-heating load.

Compressed air survey

Leak detection, pressure optimisation and better control, often one of the fastest paybacks on site.

Variable-speed drives

VSDs on pumps, fans and compressors matched to actual demand rather than running flat out.

Steam & boiler efficiency

Combustion tuning, insulation, condensate recovery and controls across the steam system.

High-bay LED & controls

LED with daylight and presence control across production and warehouse space.

Metering the big loads

Sub-metering your significant energy users so savings can be found, verified and sustained.

Our process

Four steps. We do the heavy lifting.

From the first scoping call to the notification receipt, you have one point of contact and a price agreed up front against a scope we map with you.

01

Scope & quote

A short call and a desktop review to confirm you qualify and map every site, so we scope the work properly and agree a clear price against it.

02

Data & audit

We gather energy data and carry out the audits, buildings, processes and transport, with minimal disruption to your operation.

03

Report & sign-off

Your Lead Assessor compiles the report, ranks the savings, and provides the compliant sign-off for your director.

04

Notify & save

We submit your notification to the Environment Agency and leave you with a clear plan to act on the savings.

What you get

Compliance closed, and a return on the work.

ESOS isn't just a box to tick. Done properly, the audit pays for itself in the savings it uncovers.

Full ESOS audit report

A complete, compliant report covering 95%+ of your energy use, ready for the Environment Agency.

Ranked savings register

Every opportunity costed and ranked by payback, so you act on the ones that matter first.

Lead Assessor sign-off

Formal sign-off from a registered Lead Assessor and a director-ready compliance pack.

Environment Agency notification

We handle the notification submission end to end, and confirm your compliance is on record.

Net-zero head start

A baseline and data set that feed straight into your SECR and net-zero reporting.

A price agreed up front

Once your organisation is scoped, a clear price for the defined work. No open-ended day rates.

FAQs

Manufacturing ESOS, in plain English.

Does ESOS cover our production processes, or just the buildings?

Processes are central. ESOS requires you to audit at least 95% of your total energy, and for a manufacturer that is dominated by process energy, steam, compressed air, motors and process cooling. An audit that only looks at building services would not be compliant, and would miss where your real savings are.

We run continuous or shift operations, will an audit disrupt production?

No. We work around your operation, using existing metering, half-hourly data and short non-intrusive surveys, and schedule any on-site work with your team so production is not interrupted.

We already report under SECR and have some ISO 50001 coverage, does that help?

Yes. SECR data and any ISO 50001 energy management coverage feed straight into the audit and can reduce the work. Full ISO 50001 coverage of your total energy can even satisfy ESOS on its own, but only if it genuinely covers everything, which we check as part of scoping.

How do I know if ESOS applies to us?

ESOS applies to large UK undertakings and their corporate groups: broadly, 250 or more employees, or turnover over £44m and a balance sheet over £38m. If any company in a group qualifies, the whole group is in. The eligibility check on our homepage is the quickest way to find out.

What does it cost?

It depends on your scope: your sites, and how your energy splits across buildings, transport and process. That is what the free scoping call establishes, and we then agree a clear price for the defined work up front, with no open-ended day rates.

Delivered by Engineered Efficiency

Engineers who understand your energy, not just the paperwork.

ESOS.works is the dedicated ESOS consultancy of Engineered Efficiency. We are professionally registered engineers and registered ESOS Lead Assessors, specialists in buildings, transport and industrial process, so your audit is treated as an engineering exercise, not a form to fill in.

What we bring

Registered engineers, not just assessors

Led and signed off by a professionally registered engineer who is also a registered ESOS Lead Assessor.

Buildings, transport and process

Specialists across all three areas ESOS has to cover, so nothing in your energy use is missed.

Proven at scale

Thousands of energy audits carried out, and hundreds of ESOS participants signed off in earlier phases.
