ESOS Phase 4Compliance deadline 5 December 2027 · qualification date 31 December 2026Check if you must comply →

ESOS for retail and hospitality estates, across every site.

When your energy is spread across dozens or hundreds of sites, the challenge is doing it credibly without auditing every unit. We use a robust sampling method focused on the loads that matter in retail and hospitality, refrigeration, HVAC, lighting and kitchens, and turn it into an estate-wide plan.

Competence is a legal requirement

Audited by engineers who know your industry.

An ESOS audit has to be carried out and signed off by people competent to do it, and that is a legal requirement, not a nicety. For retail & hospitality, that means a registered Lead Assessor and auditors who genuinely understand how your sector uses energy, rather than a generalist ticking boxes. Get the wrong team and the audit is neither compliant nor useful, which is why we run it as an engineering exercise built around your operation.

Across the whole estate it is handled as one ESOS consultancy, from scoping the sites to the final sign-off.

Where the energy goes

Your energy use explained across your full portfolio

Retail and hospitality sites are individually modest but numerous, so the value is in benchmarking them against each other to find the worst performers and the measures that scale across the whole estate.

01

Refrigeration

For food retail and hospitality, often the largest single load, and one that runs every hour of the year.

02

HVAC & comfort

Heating, cooling and ventilation, frequently running against poor controls and open doors.

03

Lighting

Long trading hours make lighting a major and highly visible load across the estate.

04

Catering & kitchens

In hospitality, cooking, extraction and hot water add a large, controllable load.

Where we find savings

Where we typically find savings across an estate.

Benchmarking every site against the rest is how you find the outliers, then roll the proven measures out across the portfolio.

Refrigeration efficiency

Doors, night blinds, controls and maintenance regimes to cut refrigeration energy without risking stock.

HVAC controls & setpoints

Tighter setpoints, scheduling and interlocks so you are not heating and cooling at once.

LED across the estate

A standardised LED and controls specification that rolls out site by site.

BMS & remote monitoring

Using building controls and metering to spot and fix drift across many sites at once.

Kitchen ventilation control

Demand-based extract control to cut fan and make-up-air energy in hospitality.

Estate benchmarking

Ranking sites by energy intensity to target the worst performers first.

Our process

Four steps. We do the heavy lifting.

From the first scoping call to the notification receipt, you have one point of contact and a price agreed up front against a scope we map with you.

01

Scope & quote

A short call and a desktop review to confirm you qualify and map every site, so we scope the work properly and agree a clear price against it.

02

Data & audit

We gather energy data and carry out the audits, buildings, processes and transport, with minimal disruption to your operation.

03

Report & sign-off

Your Lead Assessor compiles the report, ranks the savings, and provides the compliant sign-off for your director.

04

Notify & save

We submit your notification to the Environment Agency and leave you with a clear plan to act on the savings.

What you get

Compliance closed, and a return on the work.

ESOS isn't just a box to tick. Done properly, the audit pays for itself in the savings it uncovers.

Full ESOS audit report

A complete, compliant report covering 95%+ of your energy use, ready for the Environment Agency.

Ranked savings register

Every opportunity costed and ranked by payback, so you act on the ones that matter first.

Lead Assessor sign-off

Formal sign-off from a registered Lead Assessor and a director-ready compliance pack.

Environment Agency notification

We handle the notification submission end to end, and confirm your compliance is on record.

Net-zero head start

A baseline and data set that feed straight into your SECR and net-zero reporting.

A price agreed up front

Once your organisation is scoped, a clear price for the defined work. No open-ended day rates.

FAQs

Retail & Hospitality ESOS, in plain English.

We have hundreds of sites, do you really have to audit them all?

No. ESOS allows a sampling approach for estates of similar sites. We group your sites by type and size, audit a representative sample in depth, and extrapolate defensibly across the rest. That keeps the cost and disruption proportionate while staying fully compliant.

Some of our sites are leased or franchised, how are those treated?

It depends on who is responsible for the energy and how the units sit within your corporate group. We work out which sites fall inside your ESOS boundary during scoping, so franchised or landlord-supplied units are handled correctly rather than assumed in or out.

Will the audit interfere with trading?

No. Site visits are brief and arranged around trading hours, and much of the analysis is done remotely from half-hourly data, so customers never notice.

How do I know if ESOS applies to us?

ESOS applies to large UK undertakings and their corporate groups: broadly, 250 or more employees, or turnover over £44m and a balance sheet over £38m. If any company in a group qualifies, the whole group is in. The eligibility check on our homepage is the quickest way to find out.

What does it cost?

It depends on your scope: your sites, and how your energy splits across buildings, transport and process. That is what the free scoping call establishes, and we then agree a clear price for the defined work up front, with no open-ended day rates.
